6. Gram and pulses
Gram and pulses are cultivated in the rain depending areas. They not need much of water. The Thal area in the Province of Punjab is well known for its cultivation. The average production of pulses in Pakistan is 620 million ton.
This crop is used as a food for men and fodder for animals. Sufficient water is required for its cultivation. It is cultivated during summer season. Its plant is soft as compared to other plants. 4. Oil Producing Seeds
Edible oil is extracted from seeds. These seeds are called oil producing seeds. Cooking oil is extracted from the seeds of sunflower, sesame, mustard, or soya etc. Because of the shortage of oil producing seeds, Pakistan has to import edible oil from outside. It is therefore needed that the farmers may cultivate oil producing crops.
3. Barley and Millet
Those areas of Pakistan where there is not irrigation system available and they depend on rain are called” Barani Areas”. Barley and Millet require less water so, these are cultivated in the “Barani Areas” of the Province of the Punjab and Sindh. Pakistan has produced 230,000 metric ton Millet in 2012.
In Pakistan rice is cultivated in those areas where canal water is available. For cultivation of rice, a lot of water is required. Therefore it is also known as crop of the water.
