10. Execution of an Elephant Mary

This tragedy is known as execution of an elephant. Mary was an Asian elephant who was five ton heavy and performed in circus shows. On 12th of September, 1916. Mary killed her handler Red Eldridge, there were many stories regarding what exhausted Mary to do such terrific job and she trampled him whether the handler was forcing her to do the act when she was extremely bored or frustrated or some other facts. However Eldridge death was very sympathetic and tragic but Mary’s destiny was even more pitiable. Another horrible circus accident occurred with circus workers on 14th of June, 1920, in American history, when the circus of James Robinson arrived in Duluth for circus show. Two local teenagers James Sullivan of eighteen years age and Irene Tusken of nineteen years age met there and watched the workers loading the circus wagons. Later that night, it was claimed by Sullivan that he and Tusken were assaulted and Tuskey was raped by six circus workers. The six circus workers were arrested by police in crime of rape. On physical examination by physician there was no evidence of rape but there were rumors that Tuskey died due to violation. Then a crowd of almost 5,000 to 10,000 people gathered around the jail and attacked the jail to beat and hang the criminals. The police did not resist the mob and they took the three circus workers as they were found responsible and hanged them at Ist Street and 2nd Avenue East due to their crime.

5. The Flying Wallendas

It was an old circus family comprised of Karl Wallenda, his brother Herman, his wife Helen Kreis and many others family members. Karl Wallenda was the inventor of many astonishing acts one of them known as the seven person chair pyramid, which contained seven performers and they balanced on a chair and tight ropes almost thirty two feet in the air without any precautionary measures like safety nets, no doubt they were excellent in their work. In 1962, during their performance in Shrine circus they met an accident as the man on the front wire faltered, three men crashed to the ground, Wallenda’s son in law, Wallenda’s nephew, Dieter Schepp and Richard Faughnan were killed. Karl’s pelvis was injured and Mario who was his adopted don was also paralyzed.

4. The Cleveland Circus Fire

Death of any living thing matters a lot, in 1942 there was another miserable accident the Cleveland circus fire in which there was not any human death but was responsible for the death of more than one hundred innocent circus animals. A fire suddenly started around the menagerie tent of the Ringling brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus. Circus workers and the spectators escaped from the fire but the animals could not be saved from this widely spread fire which spread within seconds and fired the nine cages filled with tigers, lions and Zebras and burned them. 3. The Great “Wallace Brothers” Circus Train Disaster

A circus train disaster that occurred in 1903, when the two separate Wallace Brothers circus trains collided with each other. The first train slowed down its speed on the railway tract and the warning light was visible to the conductor of second train and he saw it too, but due to failure in brakes the train did not stopped and the two trains crashed. In this crash twenty seven circus workers were injured and thirty were killed. Many animals also died in that accident that includes three camels, an elephant whose name was Maud, one Great Dane and an Arabian horse.

2. Hagenbeck-Wallace Train Wreck of 1918

On 22nd of June, 1918, the hagenbeck –Wallace circus was traveling through railway route to Hammond, Indiana. The train was stopped for the night stay and a lot of circus artist slept in the wooden train cabins. While they were resting in their cabins, at 4:00 AM, a Michigan Central railway troop train forcefully hit the circus train with a speed of thirty five miles per hour and smashed it into pieces. It was all due to fault of the troop train driver who fell asleep and did not see the cautions regarding the still circus train. In this fatal accident 127 people were injured and eighty six people died.

1. The Hartford Circus Fire

The most horrific circus accident occurred on 6th of July, 1944, in Hatford, Connecticut and was one of the most injurious fire accidents in the history of United States of America due to extensive fire and tremendous loss of lives. The fire started during a performance of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus having a huge crowd of almost 7,000 people. It started in the big top circus tent due to paraffin wax and gasoline coating on it to make it water proof the fire spread briskly. There was hustle and bustle 7,000 crowd of spectators rushed towards the exist, but unluckily two of the exit points were closed for the entrance of circus animals and in this panic many peoples crushed and trampled under the weight of collapsed people. The fire caught many other spectators and they were burnt, many died because of suffocating smoke, some people jumped to save themselves but it was useless. In this disaster almost 700 people injured and approximately 169 people died.

With 17.56 million viewers, the Harlem shake dance video titled the ‘The Original’ is one of the most famous Harlem Shake styles around the world. The video is basically a homemade video showing a group of friends dressed in a very unique fashion, doing their dance moves. The costumes of the performers might not appeal to many viewers but that is what makes this style of dancing unique: you don’t have to follow a dress code. Another point to be noted is that however the title of the video is made so as to project originality, still there have been many allegations of copying other styles.
